Help Topic: Archive Help

DPWR's new Archive system is now better than ever, with new tools that make it easier to collaborate and contribute in a more Wiki-like manner. Those familiar with Wikipedia and other Wiki websites should feel more at home in the new Archive. These improvements have been made possible by migrating the Archive to its own module within the Invision Power Board system. Fear not though; if you've bookmarked an article using the old dpwr.net/archive.php address, it will continue to work; all links to the old Archive system automatically redirect you to the new location. If you're just interested in the new features, read on. If you're confused about how to do something in the new Archive, skip down to the "How To" section.


The Archive has dropped the rigid category system used previously for a new tag-based system. With this system, any article in the Archive can have multiple tags, so an entry can be labeled as an Age, and as being from Riven, and as being mentioned in the Book of Atrus, for example. You can get an overview of the complete tag collection by visiting the View All Tags page. Just click on any tag to view all of the articles that have been labeled with it.

The Archive is now fully searchable for the first time, and this search is tied directly into the new tag system. For example, if you're looking for references to "mushrooms" in the Archive, you can type "mushrooms" into the Article Title field to see any entry in the entire Archive with the word "mushrooms" in the title. You can also search within articles by entering your search term in the Article Content field.

If you only wanted to search for articles about Ages with mushrooms, you can type "mushrooms" into the Article Content field, and then select "Ages" from the list of available tags. This will limit your results to that tag.

If you only wanted to find mushroom-related content within the Ages of Uru, enter your search term as before, then select Ages, and then hold down Control (Windows) or Command (Mac) to select "Uru" from the list of tags as well. Be sure to check "Match ALL Tags" at the bottom of the form to search only for mushrooms in articles tagged "Ages" and "Uru".

If you're interested in a more broad search, like "all of the people in the game Myst III: Exile", you can do that too! By leaving the search terms blank and searching just for the tags "People" and "Myst III: Exile" (being sure to match all tags), you'll get a list of all of the articles in the Archive assigned to those two tags.

In the old Archive system, once an article was edited, the original no longer existed. This meant that revisions had to be conducted by staff members to prevent the possibility of someone defacing an entry, or even the entire Archive. To add something new to an article, you had to leave a comment and wait until the next audit to have your information merged into the article itself. Not anymore.

The new Archive takes advantage of a cornerstone of the Wiki concept: revisions. Changes to an article are now tracked and the originals stored, so an article can always be reverted back to the way it was if someone defaces it. As a result, anyone can now edit the Archive directly, adding new information as it becomes available, rather than waiting for the next auditing cycle to roll around.

Subscriptions and Feeds
The Archive now sports a "recent edits" RSS feed, to which you can subscribe using Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2 or higher, Safari 2 or higher, or your favorite RSS reader. Simply click on the orange RSS icon () to set up how you want to view the feed.

You can also subscribe to a specific tag or article. If you subscribe to a tag, any new entries or revisions posted that are marked with that tag will be sent to you via e-mail to the address you specified when you created your account. In the future, more subscription options will become available, but for now, e-mail is the only option. If you subscribe to a specific article, only revisions to that article will be e-mailed to you. You can subscribe to a tag or article by clicking the Options button in the header and selecting "Subscribe to Tag" or "Subscribe to Article".

How To

Adding an Article
To add an article, simply click the "New Article" link in the Archive's sidebar and start writing! You will notice a new field called "Tags" on the posting form. Tag your article with anything you think is relevant. If, for example, you're writing an entry on the Stoneship Age, you would tag the article with "Ages" and "Myst" (found in the "Sources: Games" tag grouping). An article on the Pento (the people, not the Age), on the other hand, would simply be tagged "Races" (though optionally you could tag it with "DRC Research" as well). To select multiple tags, you can hold down Control (Windows) or Command (Mac) while clicking on each tag. Once you have given your article a title, an optional description, and assigned it a set of tags, you can write out the article itself, using the attachment system just as you would on the forum, and click the "Add Article" button. At this time there is no preview function.

Editing an Article
You may now directly edit an article to add new information to it. To do so, click the "Edit Article" button in the banner at the top right of the page. Once you enter the edit article form, proceed just as you would if you were creating an article from scratch. You can add or remove tags as necessary, change the title, and even add attachments. A copy of the original entry you edited will be saved in the system, just as it would be in a Wiki, so don't worry about destroying an article; if you need to undo your changes, you can simply roll the article back to the way it was before you changed it.

Custom Tags
The Archive now supports several "custom tags" in addition to the tags supported through the forum's BBCode system. These tags need their options enclosed in quotation marks, unlike their BBCode brethren. To briefly introduce you to the concept of these custom tags, let's look at the [template] tag. The [template] tag is used to insert pre-defined chunks of material into your article, partly to save you the trouble of having to write that chunk out yourself, and partly to maintain consistency in the event that the chunk is modified in the future. For instance, if you wanted to mark an article as a stub (something in need of further expansion), you could insert the following text into the article:


This would automatically insert the contents of this article into your entry when it is posted.

Using the [h="#"] tags, you can build a hierarchy of headers that can double as a linked table of contents (similar to those seen in Wikipedia) when you insert the tag. Instructions detailing the use of these custom tags can be found at the bottom of the Archive's posting form. Feel free to experiment with these tags in the Testing Article, or ask questions in the Archive Request Forum if you still need help.

Reverting an Article
If you come across an article that has been defaced, or if for some reason you edit an article and your changes negatively affect the article's appearance, you can always revert an article to a previous revision. Simply click on the Options button at the top right of the article, and select "Article History". Article History gives you the ability to view past versions of an article and restore any version you like. To view an older version, click on the time stamp. To compare an older version with the current one, click on the menu button beside the time stamp and select "Compare with current". Differences are indicated in red and green highlights: red for text that has been removed between the older version and the current one, and green for text that has been added.

To mark an older version of an article as the active revision (the one everybody will see when viewing the article), select the menu button beside the revision's time stamp and click "Revert".

Adding Tags
If you find yourself in need of a tag that doesn't exist, you can create one simply by clicking "Manage Tags" in the sidebar and then clicking "New Tag" in the header of the tag management page. Enter the name of your tag and click the "New Tag" button. Your tag will then be available the next time you click "New Article". If you want to add a new tag as a child of another tag (i.e. adding a new game to the "Sources: Games" tag group), click on the menu button next to the tag you want to add yours to, and select "Add Child Tag".

Discussing Articles
Every article in the Archive has a discussion topic in DPWR's forum. You can find this topic by scrolling to the bottom of an article and clicking "Visit this article's discussion topic". Use this topic to discuss changes to the article that have been made, or that need to be made, and how to best go about integrating them into the existing content.

Requests and General Discussions
If you notice that there is a gap in the Archive, you can use the Archive Request Forum to ask for the article to be created.

You can also use the Archive Request Forum to discuss potential articles, or to hash out possible questions regarding the best way to go about categorizing something. For instance, if you are uncertain about whether you should add a tag for something you're working on, you can post in this forum to discuss options before creating your article.
