  1. Quiller, I am unaware of any areas where we are missing articles or they are too short, but feel free to look up articles/topics that interest you and add to or edit them. Perhaps though you have found this page listing our current projects. The ones that have their planning complete are ready for you get started on. I would recommend fixing the duplicate king journals as it is the least likely to be affected by a site upgrade, which Alahmnat promised long ago. The people and age sidebars are thing I am most interested in, but Al said that the software upgrade would make that easier, so you might want to hold off until I find out how long until the upgrade. I am sorry I don't have more to offer. Horatio P.S. I don't know how much you have looked around the forums here, but the most recent and important threads are these http://www.dpwr.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=5947 http://www.dpwr.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=6109
  2. Hi Quiller, Welcome to the Guild. I am around here sometimes, but, these days, I think GOA is dead or at least in a coma. We had some benefits in our heyday of being build on the shoulders of one man, Alahmnat, our dear Grand Master, but he has not been seen or heard from in six months. I lack the technical means, authority or really even the desire to take over. I will though try to pop in more over here. Let me know what you need. If you are really excited about our mission I can point you towards some things you can do. Maybe your zeal can reawaken mine. Also, PMing me here sends an e-mail to my real e-mail address and will be a way to get a faster response from me. Horatio
  3. My KI number is in my signature. It's 00214606.
  4. I am away from my computer most of this weekend and will miss the All Guilds Meeting, but thank you for the invite. As far as October and joining your recruitment drive I need to speak with my Grand Master, Alahmnat. As an individual and an Archivist I am free to do a great deal, but things which effect the Guild require his council. It is especially important that I talk with him as he has mentioned plans for software improvements to the site which may change some of how archiving is done. I want everything ready before we start recruiting new Archivists. Your plans for change sound bold and exciting, yet not over top like some. I wish you the best and will try to help you.
  5. Mr Wheeler, I remain. As GoA has failed to revive with MOULa, despite my efforts, I have drifted away from URU. That said, I would be willing to put on my long robes again and wander back into the stacks. Let me know what activities you would welcome my participation in or at least keep me in the loop, either here or by PM. Horatio

    Seret

Seret is a neighborhood which can most easily be distinguished from [article=Bevin] by its lamps. Seret has moth lamps while Bevin has hand lamps. To those unfamiliar with the history of the restoration of the Cavern, Seret seems to be a variation on Bevin as opposed to a distinct type of neighborhood. Seret is the second neighborhood opened by the DRC in their restoration efforts. While the first wave of Authorized Explorers were assigned to Bevin, later Authorized Explorers were assigned to Seret. Current explorers are assigned randomly to neighborhoods which are similar to either Bevin or Seret. While the Nexus reports that all neighborhoods are Bevin's, this is in fact inaccurate as some neighborhoods are similar in style to Seret.
  7. Since DPWR is probably a secondary website check for most people, you probably saw this thread, but if not check it out. The major guilds and all groups are having a weekend (bi-monthly?monthly?) where they will be hanging around in Kirel to talk with explorers about what they do. I don't think we have enough Archivists to make a schedule for someone to be there representing us all the time. Still, I encourage us to think about trying to be there as much as possible. This can be a good way for us to get in-game exposure for our very OOC guild.
  8. The Guild of Archivists now has a hood. We have moth lamps, so it's a Seret style hood. We also have an Eder Delin book. It's a public hood, but no doubt liable to fall off the Nexus list. Feel free to contact me if you want an invitation or if you want to join.
  9. Once you find the thread you will notice that I encouraged him to join or partner with SAPS, but alas, people with new ideas tend to like doing their own thing. Perhaps Monkeyboy and I are guilt of this too. Instead of working within existing groups or partnering with other larger or similar groups we struck off and did our own thing. Did you see this thread where SoDK and DRAEC discussed how they were different? Not so funny was seeing Keffren try to trump DocOlanA as having preeminence to the idea. Anyway, I worry that on the lore side the explorer community we have too much disunity. I think we could all keep doing what we love, but with a bettr sense of who is doing similar things and with better support for each other. I fear one group loathing another group for "stepping on their turf". I think that GoArch could be a central hub for all manner of groups involved in knowledge gathering and knowledge sharing. The Guilds exist to serve, and while we clearly have a important role in serving by storing knowledge, I think we have more to offer by supporting the gathering, studying and disseminating of knowledge.
  10. I was over on the MOUL forums and saw this thread. I posted this: I want some feedback from you as to whether teaming with and supporting the University of MYST is a good idea. Again I don't know what that means specifically, but it is the kind of thing I wish we were doing. I was thinking early today about what the guild could do IC and my first thought was these teaching kinds of things. The last thing I want though is to act in anyway like an empire claiming dominion over other people projects which fall with in our "manifest destiny". "Partnering with" "affiliated with" "with the support of" these are good phrases I think. "annexed by" "vassel of" these are bad phrases I welcome your feedback.
  11. Friends, Archivists, Visitors, like the the archive we tend, our Guild is still here, if a bit dusty. As with other groups, the closing of the Cavern, followed by the dwindling progress on MORE had slowed activity here, but with explorers returning to the Cavern I hope that we will renew our vigor. Our ranks are yet thin, but our work is not. To those who have called yourselves archivists before, renew your activity. To those who are friends of the Guild, please join us. To those who are visitors and new explorers, we welcome you here. You may wonder what we do, or what you would do if you joined us. I have just updated the projects page which should show you much of what we need help with. While there is not a lot of need for new articles (we've amassed a lot of those over the years) much needs to be done in "updating" the archive. Our role in MO:RE is still ambiguous, but we have a general mandate to help storytellers be consistent with the canon and not cross the boundaries that Cyan has set. Someday the hope, from RAWA, is that we are part of authorizing fan created ages/stories. So don't hesitate to start helping. We maintain an open policy on editing the archive. Be sure to check the guides before editing, but have at it. You will likely do more good than harm by trying, and undoing edits is easy enough. Do not hesitate to post here or PM me with any problems.
  12. Trexon, your idea is most likely to comes up against the third rule: You cannot reveal new information about Tomhana or about Riven. I really don't see this idea working no matter how much you try.
  13. Marten, I finally wrote that story I told you I was thinking about based loosely on your "first contact" idea. It shows another way this "first contact" idea could play out. Check it out here
  14. This story is based on a live story idea that Marten posted here. This story raises the question, it does not answer it. --------------------- I received an e-mail today from one of the Writers, named Beth: Dr Monroe, I need your expertise in the social sciences. I wrote an Age and, well, there are people on it. I don't know what to do with them. Can you please come by my office tonight so that you can see them. Beth Beth was a graduate student at the University, but over in the Biology department. We had served together on the ethics review board for research conducted at the University, but I knew her better from an Age we had complied a report on for the Guild of Maintainers. I knew that she had begun to learn how to Write several months ago; I recognized her username on the Guild of Writers forum. I did not realize that she had progressed so far as to create an Age. I quickly replied to her e-mail that I would help her. I called my wife and told her that I was eating out tonight with a colleague. My wife sounded disappointed, but I did not do this often. When I reached Beth's office that night I found her distressed. “Henry, I am so glad you are here. I need your help.†“I know you mentioned that in your e-mail†I replied. “I was trying to create a world where we could harvest compound F-34S, “she began. “I could describe the compound well enough and I described the rest of the landscape rather generally, you know somewhere nice to go harvesting. I guess I was not specific enough.†This seemed to her to explain things, but I found it quite unsatisfactory. “What effect did not being specific enough have?†“People, Henry, peopleâ€Â, she said looking at me as if that was a dumb question. “Perhaps I don't grasp the Art. Don't you have to Write people in†“I had thought so too, but apparently they are part of the randomness of the Link.†I guessed that was possible. “Okay, let me see them. I brought my gear for making observations.†I said. Sadly, what I had was mostly for showing off to the undergraduates and not my best gear. That was at home. Still, it would do. She pulled a Descriptive Book out of her desk. She offered me the linking panel. “Hold on, do you have the maintainers approval? It is stable?†I said. “Clearly, I've been there. How else did I see the people,†she said. “Do you have a linking book back to here?†I said, trying to be mindful of everything that could go wrong. “I have a descriptive book back to this room in my Age.†nodding a pushing the descriptive book closer to me. I reached out my hand to the moving image of the plains surrounded by mountains. As my fingers made contact with the linking panel I felt the tingling rise up my arm and over my whole body. There was darkness, then a rushing and I found myself standing in the middle of a wide green plain. A river flowed nearby in the direction of the overhead sun. It was a very earth like age and I was in a region similar to the temperate grassland of the prairie of North America or the pampas of South America. Beth burst into existence next to me. She looked around to get her bearings. “Very earth-like†I commented. “There are phrases that the Guild of Writers have to create very earth-like Ages.†“I don't see any people,†I said. “Luckily they didn't appear too close to the link in point.†she said. “Unluckily, they appeared right where I described the compound to appear†That seemed an odd coincidence to me. “Let me show you what success I've had though.†She led me down to the river and dipped some sort of sampling instrument into it. She let the water drip onto some paper she had and the paper turned from white to green. “See, the compound is in the water. I Wrote that,†she said, smiling proudly. “What is this compound again?†I said. “It is F-34S, it is a compound with remarkable healing properties when used on animals and probably humans. It does not exist in nature and it is expensive to create in the lab. By Writing this Age I have provided a means to substantially advancing the quality of medicine. Imagine healing from surgery in half the time it currently takes.†There was no greed in Beth's manners, but I knew that soon someone would realize what a profit could be turned from this. We could address that later, I needed to see the native inhabitants of this Age. We followed the river upstream for about a mile. Turning a bend we slowed our pace and climbed up the nearby rise. The village was laid out near the river. I pulled my field glasses up to my eyes. It appeared to be what would be categorized in the three-age system as a bronze age civilization. The houses were permanent, and fields spread out around the perimeter of the village. I saw no signs of horses or roads or anything to make me think that they would ever chose to travel too far, including down towards the site of the Link-in location. My initial analysis was that these people should not be a problem if Beth wanted to link in and harvest this compound from the river near the link in point. “See where all those fields of cabbage or vines or whatever are, that's where I wrote for the compound to appear.†She seemed disappointed, but I was excited. She had Written for these people a source of food with natural healing properties. Sure it mean that she could not harvest it from there, but she had given these people a great advantage. I increased the magnification of my field glasses to get a better look at the plants. They were not cabbage or vines. They looked more like cornstalks that had rotted and fallen down. Horror gripped me. The crops were blighted. I reduced the magnification on my field glasses. I now realized that there were no people working the fields. Two people emerged from a house carrying a bundle between them. It was person sized. They walked over the next hill and returned a minute later empty handed. “This is bad,†I said. “I know, we can only harvest from the river,†She said, not aware of what I just saw. “No, much worse. Your compound is the result of a crop disease. Look through my field glasses. Those are not vines in their fields, those are diseased dying crops. The rain water washes your compound down into the river. I am guessing that your compound required domesticated, food producing plants to suffer a specific disease, which ruins the food part and leaves among the decaying stalk the compound you seek. These people are dying because of what you Wrote.†The horror of causing the deaths of these people broke over her face. “How responsible am I? What should I do? â€Â
  15. [h=1]Society of Anthropologists, Psychologist, and Sociologists[/h] Established: September 2007 CE [h=2]Mission statement:[/h] To expand our understanding of D'ni, its people, its culture and all people and groups effected by it through anthropological, psychological and sociological study. The Society of Anthropologists, Psychologist, and Sociologists, often abbreviated SAPS, is a group dedicated to analyzing and explaining what is known about D'ni, its people and its culture through the perspective of the social sciences. They will also examine connected cultures, both Written and surface. The group will imitate a genuine scientific society to the extent that it is practical and enjoyable. Besides discussion among members they will also produce articles and reports in a style similar to real world journal articles and reports. They welcome those of both amateur and professional skill. SAPS currently has their own forum on DPWR. In addition to a couple of articles written by Horatio, Kerryth lead a discussion in the Cavern regarding etiquette. SAPS was co-founded by Monkeyboy and Horatio. Other members include Szark and Kerryth.
  16. I have been keeping an eye open over at the GoMa forums where the FCAL panel plans have been shaping up. You can find several threads here and here and the original proposal here. I posted this morning this message: I will attempt to answer this question. And the answer is, to a large part, that the Writer needs to know where he or she could get in trouble. If the Writers is uncertain about it, he or she should include it in the proposal. Now to help Writers think about the most likely ways to get in trouble here is a list of things that should be included, if they are part of your Age: Any reference to any Cyan created character Any reference to any Cyan created Age Any reference to D'ni History, D'ni Kings, historical D'ni Guilds, historical D'ni culture -the Writer should demonstrate how "new" information revealed along these lines is limited in scope to a small group and does not effect the whole canon Any reference to Cavern locations Any linking processes or activities that do not confirm exactly to the patterns of traditional D'ni Writers Writers could organize their proposal as answers to these questions if they wish. I will cross post this on the GoA forums to get further feedback on other questions that proposal should answers. While I like to pretend that I speak for GoA, I welcome your input here or over there. I will try to keep this thread updated as things progress.
  17. Welcome to DPWR We are very glad you are here. DPWR is the home to several different activities and groups. Most prominent is the Guild of Archivists, often abbreviated GoA, but you will find several different things going here as well. DPWR can be a big and confusing place at first and we want to help you understand what is here. The Archive This is the place most people who come to DPWR are looking for. All you need to do to reach the Archive is click on the "Archive" tab near the top of the page, below the DPWR logo. Once you are at the Archive you can use the sidebar to the left to reach articles of interest. You can use the "search" link under "browse" to search for exactly what you are looking for. The search tool offers a variety of filters if you wish to use them and is a very effective system for narrowing your search to exactly what you are looking for. Under "browse" are a number of other ways to browse the Archive, whether by "tag", "most viewed" or some other way. Tags are the primary way that the articles in the Archive are organized. The Forums This the place where you will find several different forums. As with most forums on the internet, you may view any the forums without registering, but in order to post you do have to register. All you need to do to reach the Forums is click on the "Forums" tab near the top of the page, below the DPWR logo. At the top are the forums for the Guild of Archivists. Here the business of the Guild is discussed including managing and expanding the Archive. joining GoA is simple, but being a member of GoA is not required for participation in these forums or in other Guild activities. Below that you will find the Writer's Ring Forum. This is the place for posting fiction, images or other creative output. This is also the place to discuss storytelling in-game or through making ages. GoA's role in approving the story aspects of ages that are shared with the community makes DPWR a great place to discuss story ideas. Below those forums you will find the Community Forums. These forums are for general information and include most other kinds of forum activity not included in the other forums, including off-topic discussions. Below those forums is the Community Projects Forums. Here you will find a variety of projects and groups which are hosted at DPWR.net but are not necessarily affiliated with DPWR or GoA. Below these forums are the Forum Support & Feedback Forums. If you have a problem with the forums or want to give some feedback, this the place to go. The Gallery The gallery is where members of DPWR can upload images and create their own albums. All you need to do to reach the Gallery is click on the "Gallery" tab near the top of the page, below the DPWR logo. Links The links page where a variety of links to other important sites in the Uru community available. All you need to do to reach the Links is click on the "Links" tab near the top of the page, below the DPWR logo. Library The library is where fiction submitted by other members is stored. All you need to do to reach the Library is click on the "Library" tab near the top of the page. It is divided into Myst-related stories (MRED) and general fiction (General). The Library has not been in use for quite some time and its functionality may be limited. Community The community tab is the place to find out the latest news related to Myst, Uru and the player community. All you need to do to reach the community section is click on the "Community" tab near the top of the page. Members The members tab allows you to see all the members of DPWR and search for specific ones. You can also filter your searches. All you need to do to reach the members section is click on the "Members" tab near the top of the page. Help This is a great place to find specific details on how to use the features of DPWR. All you need to do to reach the help section is click on the "Help" tab near the top of the page. Some of this information may be old, so if you encounter a problem please send a PM to Alahmnat (if you do not know how to send a PM see below for further help in finding your inbox). Golden KI The Golden KI is a screenshot competition for in-game images taken during normal gameplay. All you need to do to reach the golden KI section is click on the "Golden KI" tab near the top of the page. As MOUL is shut down and what comes next has not yet started, this competition is not currently running. There is also a Search Button at the far right that allows you to search the forums, the Archive or the gallery. Your Profile, Control Panel and Inbox Once you are registered, your profile can be accessed by clicking on your user name at the top left of the screen below the tabs (your user name is probably right below the "DPWR.NET" tab). Your user control panel can be accessed by clicking on "my controls" and then "my controls" on the drop down menu. Your inbox can be found to the far right of the screen, but in that same row at the top of your screen, right below the tabs. The link to your inbox probably is right below the "Search" tab. Again welcome to DPWR. Feel free to look around, post in the forums, and join in the things that are happening here. ~The DPWR and Guild of Archivists Staff~
  18. let's pretend that we are making progress and say that Blade is the current FCAL rep and I will be the alternate. Yes Blade, much of the details need to be worked out, and you seem to have sunk your teeth in over at the GoMa forum doing just that. good luck, I will keep an eye on the proceedings.
  19. If you wish to be considered for placement to the FCAL panel please reply here. I worry that we do not have enough active Archivists to place three people on the FCAL panel at this time. Personally, I don't know if I can commit the time to it. I would be willing to serve though if no one else steps forward.
  20. Robert, Don't send the writers flooding over here just yet. Alahmnat needs to create a tag (tags?) for fan created ages. I think the actual technical work is easy, but I don't know if he has decided how he wants to do it. That said, I'll answer your question so that you are ready when we are ready. Adding articles if fairly easy. Click on the "Archive" tab at the top of the page. In the side bar on the left there is header called "Contribute". Under that click on "New Article". Fill in the fields and write up your article. Click "Add Article" at the very bottom to add it. Before you or any of the Writers starting popping out articles we would really appreciate if you all read the "Guidelines for Contributing to the Archive" http://www.dpwr.net/forums/index.php?autoc...icle&id=976 of greatest relevance to you is the section on how Ages should be written up http://www.dpwr.net/forums/index.php?autoc...amp;id=976#Ages It would be great, Robert, if you were the first of the Writers to add an entry on a fan created Age. We can work out any kinks in the process and then we will have an example article to point other GoW members to.
  21. I have just skimmed some of the info over at MOUL related to Genesis, so maybe I do not fully understand. Anyway, I think a large library would be a great representation of us. When I say large, I mean uselessly large. The book shelves can simply be images, in most places, but for some reason I like the idea of a massive library with long shelves of books. Part of the fun could be in searching for clickable books. Of course real introductory info would be super easy to find.
