  1. Shorah! As of this evening, we are once again running the latest version of Invision Community (4.6.6). With this upgrade, I've been able to re-streamline the registration process. New members will still have their content flagged for review if they meet certain spam thresholds during registration, but if you're here legitimately, you'll no longer have to deal with the clunky "post here first so we can approve you manually" rigmarole; your new account should Just Work. (Lookit that old-school smiley-face, I've missed him...) Additionally, this new version of Invision Community has introduced new features like badges and an overhauled ranks/reputation system. I don't want to gamify the community side of the site too extensively, and I'm not super huge on public "reputation" systems as a community-driven metric for determining member "quality", but I do want to play around with these new systems a little and see what can be done to personalize them for the community here. Basically, the implementation of these systems is still in flux while I feel them out, so if you see things changing between visits, that's what's up. Finally, there's some big news on the infrastructure side of things here. As we announced a while back, Cyan has effectively adopted the Guild of Archivists as the official home for lore and community history for the Myst franchise. With that has come the decision to host the site on their servers to ensure its continuity in perpetuity. I'll still be in charge of running things around here, but Cyan will essentially be picking up the tab and providing anti-bus-factor defenses. Now that both Cyan and I have some mental bandwidth to deal with the transition process (and to be clear, the bottleneck there has been me, not them), I expect that to start happening relatively soon (like, in the next month or so). You shouldn't see any forward-facing changes, but there may be a brief window where things are offline while we roll everything over. You may also see some changes to the staff page as we work to bring on at least one of the Cyan folks as an admin here (again for bus-factor-related reasons). Also, as part of this move, we're going to be sending out messages to folks who have previously registered and allowed us to contact them via email, letting them know that we're still here and open for business as a community hub. This will be one of the only times (if not THE only time) we've ever utilized this line of communication, and I promise we won't be using it to send you garbage on the reg going forward. It's just a one-time touch-point to see if there's anyone out in the wilderness who may be interested in checking back in. While Cyan had previously closed their own forums due to the amount of technical debt they had accumulated over the years, it's my intention to keep the forums and other Invision-powered elements of this site intact for the extended foreseeable future. On top of some of the other things I've either already built (like the Jalak Game Directory) or still have in the works (like [REDACTED]), I still feel like forums are a valuable resource for every community and fill a need that places like Discord simply aren't designed to accommodate, and the Myst community has been without one of those for some time now. Anyway, that's the latest. Now I need to go fall over so I can be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at work tomorrow. Take care and stay safe, all!
  2. Bonus new feature: night mode! Click here to turn it on for certain times of the day, or you can just change the theme using the "Theme" dropdown at the bottom of the page to keep it on permanently. Please be sure to report any issues you have with the dark mode theme in the Feedback forum.

BY(BlueYellow), RB(RedBlue), GR(GreenRed), and YG(YellowGreen)... will start off on the arena so that the teams are all scattered up. When the pillars start moving, it's up to you and your team to find your way to the edge and jump to your team’s fortress before the other teams do. When everyone from a team has successfully jumped to the appropriate fortress, then that team has won and the round is over. The winning team is rewarded with one of the five jalakblocs which can be kicked over to their fortress for safe keeping after a round. The first team who collects all five of the jalacblocs wins the game. (This game can also be played with 2 or 3 teams and you can also change the team names to just Blue, Red, Green, and Yellow, too, if it makes it easier.) Gameplay: Make up 4 teams and change your clothes to match the color of your team (ie. team YG could wear a yellow top and green pants). Also, select two judges who will watch and control the pillars from the forts. Flatten the arena and have all the teams scatter themselves on the grid. The judges must be off to the side and clear from the arena. *obviously the jalakfield must stay off* When everyone is in place, the judges will press either the 4th or 5th 'randomize pillar' buttons in the KI. However this does NOT mean the game has started. the Judges will say "GO!" 4 or 5 seconds after the pillars start moving, so the pillars are at least a little mixed up. Players must now navigate their way through the maze of moving pillars to the edge of the arena where they will jump off onto the right fortress with the team colors. Once all the players of one team are on their fort, they have won that round. Judges will raise the floor to the top and spawn 1 of the 5 jalakblocs which will then be kicked over to the fortress of that winning team for safe keeping. The floor is reset and a new round begins. the first team to complete 5 round and collect all 5 of the jalakblocs wins the game. Rules: Players are not allowed to touch the pillar or Jalakbloc controls during the game. Forcefield must stay off If a player falls off into the jungle below, then most likely their team will lose that round, but if they manage to link back into the game fast enough, they can give it another shot. Judges must keep the pillars moving continuously throughout a round. Tips and Hints: use the colored markings on the pillars to help navigate yourself when you can't determine which direction you need to go. It is helpful to get a running start off the edge so that you can clear the jump onto a fort. make sure you jump when you are high enough. Jump from a low pillar and you will most likely fail the jump.
  4. Originally posted on http://www.heywetried.com/jalak by: rong Teams and Players This is a game for two teams, each team can have from one to as many players as you like! Setting up the game First turn on the jalakfield, then load the jalaball column file with the command: /loadcolumns Jalaball Once the columns are set, they are not moved at all for the duration of the game. A single player from either team is elected to trigger the jalaball for each round of play (the 'dropper') for the duration of the whole match. Objective Get a jalaball into your own goal! The two team goals (yellow and red) are the single lowered columns in opposing corners. Playing the game Each team chooses a corner as their goal (yellow corner or red corner) for the duration of the whole match. All team members start each round in their own goal (for example, if you are in the yellow team then you must stand in the yellow corner with the fish symbol). When both teams are in position, the elected 'dropper' drops a single jalaball into the arena. When the jalaball lands, the round starts. Players now jump out of their team goal and attempt to push the jalaball back into their own team goal. Once the jalaball has been pushed into a teams goal, the round ends (the jalaball may be left in the teams goal, see Scoring). Teams now return to their goal ready for the next round of play. Scoring Each jalaball that a team pushes into their own goal is one point. A team that collects three jalaballs (three points) wins a set. When this happens, remove the three jalaballs from the goal and put a single small jalasquare in the goal to indicate a set has been won (see Tips for the suggested way to remove the jalaballs). The opposing team must also remove any jalaballs in their goal, so a new set can be started. The first team to win three sets wins the game! Tips If you're like me, then you use both mouse buttons to run in moul, but this can result in accidental triggering of columns. I suggest using shift with your move forward key to run, and not use the mouse for the game. If you want a more leisurely game, make people walk! When a set is won, jalaballs must be removed from each teams goal. The easiest way I find to do this is to lower a column adjacent to your team goal (effectively making your goal bigger), turn off the Jalakfield, and push the balls into oblivion. Afterwards, just make sure you raise the column back up, and turn the Jalakfield back on! The easiest way to put a jalablock (a small cube) in a teams goal when a set is won is to stand in the centre, face the goal where you wish to put the jalablock, step back very slightly, drop the jalablock into the arena and jump to 'head' the block into the goal!
  5. Shorah! It's been a while in the making, but as of 4:15 AM Pacific Time, we're officially up and running on the latest version of the Invision Community software, which is a huge update from the Invision Board software we had been running previously. There are still some visual quirks that need to be ironed out, particularly with the Jalak Games Directory, but those will be sorted over the next week or two. In the meantime, welcome to the new digs, and I hope you like what we've done with the place! (As a quick aside, despite the change in URL scheme for the old Archive content on this side of the site, I've made sure that links to those pages will still continue to redirect to the new MediaWiki Archive, because I strongly believe that treating link rot is important. And also it helps out search rankings to not have a ton of 404s out there.) New Features Gallery The Gallery is back! We've worked with Cyan to upload all of the concept art and design work for the Intangibles release last week, and we'll be working to expand the collection of material available for viewing to include the rest of Uru and the other Myst games. "In-cavern" images and artistic concept pieces should still be uploaded as needed to the wiki, but more technical works and other adjacent material can now be placed here for easier visibility and storage. Clubs A new feature of Invision Community is Clubs. You can use these to create your own smaller groups on the site, complete with a gallery, a club calendar, and a unique forum. We've also set up the main forum to show topics from the clubs you're a member of, so it's easier to keep tabs on what your clubs are up to. Now, if you have a guild or other in-cavern group that you want to operate, but don't want to run your own site or forum, you can set up shop with us! And speaking of forums… New Forum Layout We have a new "fluid" forum layout that shows all recent topics from all forums together in the same place. Given the general lack of activity here, it seemed like a better solution than keeping things separate. However, if you prefer the old layout, you can get it back by using the toggle button at the top of the forum index. Better Registration(?) One of the benefits of the new software is that we now have access to Invision Community's spam services. This should mean that we'll have fewer problems with spam registration, and we can undo some of the more convoluted steps to joining the community here. I'm going to let things run for a week or two to see how the service shakes out, but I'm hopeful that we can simplify things a bit for those who want to join us here. Future Projects Unified Forum/Wiki Accounts One of the other additional benefits to the upgrade is that it provides better support for connecting external accounts. I still have some research and testing to do on this front, but I do hope to be able to let people use a single account for both the community and the wiki, rather than needing separate accounts for each. Additional Storage The Gallery is the first step on the path to making the Guild of Archivists site the go-to resource for lore-related information of all kinds, and we're working with Cyan to establish a pipeline for releasing and storing that data here. One More Thing... I have a project in progress that will hopefully enable the Library to make its own triumphant return in the future. It's not quite ready for prime time yet, as it requires banging a few pieces of the software into a shape that they weren't quite designed to make on their own, but I think you'll all really enjoy it once it's finished. I'll hopefully have more to share on this project soon, so stay tuned.
